At Foothill Dental Care, Dr. Buchanan is asked one very common question: “How can I whiten my teeth?” Many patients find that even though they follow the suggested oral hygiene routines (brushing and flossing twice a day) it isn’t enough to keep your pearly whites, well… white. The truth is that there are a number of reasons your teeth may be lacking that healthy glow. Whether you are taking proper care of your teeth or not, stained teeth can also be contributed by eating or drinking specific types of foods or drinks. Here are some foods and drinks that may be causing your lackluster smile:
-
WineRed wine in particular. With its tannins and extremely dark reddish/purplish color, it can cause your teeth to stain incredibly easily. Although you are not off the hook with white wine either because it also has many staining factors.
-
TeaSpecifically black tea. It also has staining tannins. Black tea is the worst in regards to the color of your teeth, while green and white teas are a safer bet.
-
SodaIt doesn’t matter the color. Both light and dark sodas are toxically acidic, and can promote tooth stains from other foods. Soda makes your teeth incredibly porous and destroys the enamel, not to mention it’s awful for your health overall.
-
Tomato SauceIt’s deep red color, similar to red wine, can also stain your teeth.
If you find these foods or drinks a part of your daily life and you just can’t quit them, Dr. Buchanan suggests swishing your mouth with water after eating or drinking any teeth staining foods. You can also try drinking from a straw, which helps avoid long exposure on your teeth’s surfaces.
