Yes, Replace Your Toothbrush

Yes, Replace Your Toothbrush

Do you remember the last time you replaced your toothbrush? Think about it: you throw out expired foods, restock vitamins and medicines, and even replace our beauty products often, but often our dental hygiene does not get as much attention. Here are a few essential tips for maintaining optimal dental health.

Changing Your Toothbrush

Most dentists, and the American Dental Association (ADA), recommend that you change your toothbrush every three months. After some time, toothbrushes get worn down and become less effective at removing plaque from teeth and gums. It usually takes about three months to notice that your toothbrush is worn.

Another thing to consider is that germs can hide and build up in toothbrush bristles, which makes it especially important to replace your toothbrush after you have had a cold, or you can get sick again. If your toothbrush is not taken care of properly, fungus and bacteria can also develop in the bristles as well.

After brushing your teeth, be sure to rinse off and dry your toothbrush thoroughly. It would help if you also stored your brush uncovered unless you are taking it with you when you travel. If you cannot remember exactly how long it has been since you have replaced your toothbrush, look at the condition of your brush. Are the bristles worn out? Do they fan out, or do you see dark color changes? If you cannot remember the last time you replaced your toothbrush, it is probably time to replace it.

What If I Do not Change My Toothbrush Often Enough?

If the idea of bacteria and fungus accumulating on your toothbrush bristles doesn’t give you enough of a reason to replace your toothbrush more often, several other issues can come up. One risk includes damaging your gums. When toothbrushes are old, they aren’t as effective at removing plaque from your teeth. It can lead to gingivitis, which can cause infection and teeth to fall out.
